What is a live photo book? Print that plays video, explained

A live photo book looks, at first glance, like any other printed hardback photo book. The difference shows up when you hold a phone camera over a page: the still photo on the paper starts playing as video, through an app that recognises the printed image and overlays the matching clip on your screen in real time.

It's a genuine hybrid of print and video, not a gimmick layered on top of a normal photo book — and it solves a specific problem that a normal photo book or a phone gallery both fail at.

The problem it solves

Photos capture a moment. Video captures how the moment moved and sounded. Most families end up with both scattered across phones, cloud drives, and old hard drives, disconnected from each other and rarely looked at again. A live photo book puts them back together: the printed page is the moment as a photograph, and the video underneath it is the same moment as it actually happened — a speech, a laugh, a child's first steps — accessible by pointing a phone at the page.

How it actually works

Print. Photos are selected and laid out into a hardback book, printed to the same quality as a premium photo book — this part looks and feels identical to any other book on a shelf.

Scan. Each page that has a video attached is linked, during production, to the specific clip that matches it. This mapping happens once, at the point the book is made.

Play. The recipient opens our companion app and points their phone camera at a page. The app recognises the image and plays the linked video, overlaid on the live camera view — the photo appears to move.

No account or login is required for the recipient — the app works from the book itself, so it stays usable years after the event, as long as the video files remain hosted.

What you need to make one

Bring the photos you want printed and the video clips you want linked to specific pages — even short clips work well, ten to thirty seconds is usually enough to capture a moment without the flipping-through-a-book experience turning into sitting through a film. We handle the layout, the print, and the video linking; the only real preparation on your side is picking which moments get which treatment.

Who it actually suits

This isn't the right format for every photo book. It earns its cost when there's genuine video worth attaching — a wedding with speeches and a first dance, a baby's first year with first steps and first words, a family archive spanning a trip or a milestone birthday. For photos alone, with no video to add, a standard photo book is the better and more affordable choice.

The point isn't the technology. It's that a printed object — something that sits on a shelf and gets picked up — can still hold the version of the moment that a photo alone leaves out.

As a gift, it tends to land hardest with people who already have the photos in a drawer somewhere and the videos buried in a phone they'll lose in two years. It gives both a permanent, physical home.
